Happy Halloween from Miss Tina Unicorn!

We will continue to work on the writing assignment for the Jobs unit. Students will brainstorm three different jobs they want and describe the duties of these jobs. Choose one of these jobs to write about. Make a plan, explaining three duties of this job and three reasons why you want this job. Then students will use their plans to write a rough draft paragraph. Be sure to skip lines and include some vocabulary words from the unit. Students should also include sentences with “I want to”, “I like to”, and “I need to” + base verbs in the paragraph.

Here is Mel’s writing example from today’s class:

Reminder: There will be a test on Monday, Nov. 4 on the jobs unit.

We will continue to work on using like to, want to and need to correctly in sentences. We add an infinitive after the word, “to.” Example: Sue likes to cook desserts, and she is a very good cook. We use infinitives when we want to change a verb to an adjective, adverb, or noun. Example: Bill likes to play soccer. To use infinitives, we add “to” before the base form of the verb. Example: Mike likes to go shopping on the weekends.

Remember: add “to” + the base form of the verb. Example: to dance

Students will also start planning for the writing assignment about jobs.

REMINDER: There will be a test on the Jobs unit on Monday, Nov. 4

We will continue to work on using the articles, a, an & the correctly by completing some worksheets.

Like, want, and need are common verbs. A noun/noun phrase or an infinitive form of a verb (to + base form of the verb) often follows like, want, or need.

Noun Phrase: I like my career. Infinitive: I like to help people.

Students will work on identifying the noun phrases ad infinitives in sentences.

Students worked on some practice worksheets using the articles a, an, or the, correctly. We corrected these worksheets together and discussed. There is more information below about using “the” as an article and the difference between indefinite and definite articles.

Students also worked on writing complete sentences. Every sentence must have a subject and a verb. Students handed in an assignment related to this topic for marks (hand in).

Students also worked on the Reading Comprehension assignment from last week in small groups.

Students will start class with a Daily Editing warm-up assignment and we will correct it together.

We will continue working on the JOBS unit.  Students will discuss the types of jobs they would like and wouldn’t like to have and the reasons why. Students will also work on a vocabulary skill involving word forms. Some words are both nouns and verbs. They look the same, but they work differently in a sentence. A noun refers to a person, place, object or idea. A verb refers to an action. Learning to use the same word in different forms helps build your vocabulary. We will practice using this vocabulary skill by writing sentences using the same word as a noun and as a verb.

Example: PLAN

Noun: His plan is to go on vacation next month. Verb: I plan activities for people in my office.

We will also look at using articles with nouns in sentences and prepositions with verbs. There is more information about these topics below.

REMINDER: There is NO SCHOOL on Friday, Oct. 25. Have a nice long weekend! 🙂
